Bus Safety Tips

Tips for Students
Wear bright colors in the pre-dawn hours and at dusk so others can see you.
Don’t talk to strangers on the way to school or at bus stops. Report anyone suspicious to school personnel or the police.
Cross streets at the crosswalks or street corners. Do not cross directly in front of a school bus.
Stay safely away from the road.
Wear shoes and clothing that will allow you to move safely.
Do not push or shove while entering or leaving a bus.
Walk to school with a buddy or parent.
While waiting for the bus, students should stay off the road and away from traffic.
Only get off at the designated stop.
Avoid short cuts; do not walk through alleys or vacant lots.
Neighbors and parents should turn on outdoor lights in pre-dawn and dusk hours.
Students should know their home phone number, address and parents’ work numbers. Place a card with this                             information in their backpack or shoe.
Tips for Parents
Be educated and up-to-date on the rules and safety concerns surrounding school buses. Frequently review safety tips with kids.
Know and enlist other parents to help monitor bus stops and routes. Don’t hesitate to take any concerns to the school district.
Get to know the bus driver and keep phone numbers handy in case of a delay or emergency.
